Defeats are always hard to accept, even more so if the performance given is shockingly poor.
Last night, away to Plymouth Argyle, that opening line fits perfectly.
Shocking, lacklustre and poor are just three of many words that could be used to describe it.
Therefore it is no wonder that the Hatters support have taken to social media to air their disappointment of how something so promising could turn into a crock of you know what.
Now, I’ve selected a quartet of posts relating to last night, but, to be fair, I could have chosen any four from hundreds left on the various social media platforms.

Doughty only person who turned up, time for changes top to bottom

I’d agree, Alfie was the best of a poor bunch, but even thn I’d suggest it was only a 6 out of 10 performance.
Someone seriously need to have a word with Rob, because whatever he is doing.. It isn't… working
Look at the bigger picture, rather than implementing something that won't work. Also get Adebayo off for a few games, he's a liability

I’ll not argue, Eljiah needs taking out of the firing line but with Carlton Morris declared not fit for selection, with a quad injury, it was never going to happen.
Carrying too many players – Chong, Clark, Adebayo
Set pieces consistently poor
No plan B
Formation all over the place
Players in the wrong positions. So very poor

Sums things up perfecty, perhaps a clear the air meeting is required btween Edwards and the Hatters hieracrchy, something has to change.
The results vs Millwall and Sheff Weds overshadowed what were below average performances. Tonight showed just how many cracks there are. The team and the attitude needs to change, no shape, no identity, and no points tonight.

It is a worrying situation and I things don’t improve against Oxford United, on Tuesday evening, the dream could become a nightmare.

Luton Town – The Thoughts Of Honest Rob – Plymouth Argyle (a)
I have never seen so many poor performances since Lenny Laurence was in charge. And he had far bigger problems then than Edwards will ever face. That shows you how bad things have become.
Very disappointing performance. Agree with most of what has already been posted.
Our set pieces are too predictable and have been countered by the opposition, time to be more creative.
We have never been a long ball team, time to getbthe ball on the deck and play a passing game, much more effective.
I have always been an Addy fan, but he needs a rest and someone else given a chance.
Thankfully we have a very good goalie.
Rob Edwards has to dorf out this issue of why so many players are not playing for him the pressure is really on hom now another performance like that on Tuesday night and I think the work sack him could be a real possibility why does he play a back 3 it is not working everyone can see that Adeybayo needs to be taken out of the team his confidence is shot to bits and the other worring thing is the injuries are starting to ramp up again Anderson has been injured since he came to Luton get rid he cant stay fit and why are getting some many players injured to be honest I think it’s time for a new manager or a relegation scrap will be what is served up for this season
RE needs a rest ! Its the same old BS from him each week – the players have been spoilt by their season in the Prem and seem not to care anymore ! RE is a novice to management and I would rest him for a couple of weeks and let big Mick take over to show him what to do – we need people like Paul Hart brought in on say a months contract along with Big Mick. REs 2 assistants seem useless too. RE is too stubborn – we just cant play out from the back and the teams frustration is now making good players bad. The Board must act NOW!!
RE broke up a very good squad because it was NJ squad and the players he has brought in are not as good. When is Joe Taylor going to get a proper chance. If Marvellous had started they wouldn’t have scored there first goal. All the supporters can see whats wrong but RE can’t.
320 mile 7 hr trip down ( from Leeds ) to watch that utter garbage whatever RE is trying to it simply isn’t working we could all see after 10minutes 😡 now home £270 worse off , Elijah needs to give that shirt back never seen anyone so disinterested in my life !!! It’s about time these players started putting in as much effort as us supporters
People need to realise that the club has given him a very enhanced 4 year contract and the club will not sack him.So what ever we say or want will fall on deaf ears the board will not sack him unless the fans make it very clear they don’t want him an that won’t happen except the few in one section of the stand we know who we are. Or he loses the dressing room and that’s unlikely.
Edwards needs to admit that his team has been off the pace against everyone we’ve played so far this season. He needs to admit that our defensive and midfield line up has been played through as the opposition continues to find too much space. He needs to admit that Adebayo needs a rest to sort his attitude out. Then he needs to tell us how he’s going to address it! We can all see it why can’t he? We’ve lost that USP of being a front footed aggressively attacking team with a passion to win!
I think it’s highly likely that, although RE was given a 4 year contract , there is a performance clause in there. also, its football , we have all travelled miles over the years, spent thousands, win lose or draw, we do it. RE doesn’t need to tell us anything, it’s his head on the line. It’s easy for us to tap away and say our piece ,which is fair, but, there are a few players at the moment that aren’t as good as they think they are… just an opinion…..plus personally I think there is a problem between the board & playing staff. Again just my opinion….
Wise words Alan but alas they will fall on deaf ears both here and at the club. On this side it’s frustration talking on the other well you know as well as I . The board is far more interested in power court and making money than the problem on the pitch.
Playing / management staff. Should have read.
What a waste of time and money to get down to Plymouth when a lot of our players might as well have stayed on the coach. Adebeyo, Clarke, Woodrow. Unacceptable performances. Get Adebeyo out of the team and spend some time discovering what his left foot is for, other than tripping himself up.
Tactically inept and still unable to keep Anderson fit for half a game after how many months?
Last season we competed in every game. Why are we not doing that this season? Relegation blues??? Not acceptable if that is the case!!!
I agree that 3 at the back is not working and Eli should be rested. Why RE doesn’t try playing Taylor from the start mystifies me. At least he shows he wants to play and works his socks off when he comes on. He gives us something different and is a proven goalscorer albeit at a lower level, and gets into excellent positions, as shown at Wembley and again on Friday night!
My bigger concern is the injuries we are already suffering. Baptiste, Bell, Anderson, Mengi(?) etc. Surely this can’t be helping with performances as RE has to continually shuffle his pack.
We were told that the injury crisis we had last season was due to the faster pace in the Premier League, so why is that continuing now this season!!!
Hi Tony, Alan pointed out after attending a physio forum that many clubs are in the same boat.that coaches insisted on a 45 min warm up before games then games lasting 100mins meaning players are on the go for over 2hrs. The physics all agree that the warm up is to long and is part of the problem and individual players need individual plans not one size fits all but if the coaches won’t listen what can they do!!!!
Wise words Alan but alas they will fall on deaf ears both here and at the club. On this side it’s frustration talking on the other well you know as well as I . The board is far more interested in power court and making money than the problem on the pitch.
Players are playing poorly – Clark not at the races at all – Chong doesn’t fit into the system – Mengi poor since his head was turned and Elijah is so far off it – I’m not sure what to make of the manager to be honest – surely he is seeing the same as we are ? We need to play 4 at the back with 5 across the middle – this will suit the players more but at the end of the day if they are playing as poorly as they are no formation will work !!!
So Edwards has stated Ady will start tomorrow and pleads for us to get behind him well sorry it doesn’t wash with me or many others I know. Let’s be realistic here when he had the same problem last year dropping him bucked him up and revitalised him. Of course the manager will defend him it’s his job. But he’s at a low point and low on confidence.
Thanks Chris (Alan) Point well noted. I must admit I tend to agree with Peter re 4 at the back and 5 in midfield. This is what Burnley had against us and they flooded our final third on the counter, for which we had no answer and were overrun at times – hence their 4 goals!
Did QPR not adopt the same formation as well?
I know we are missing Marv, but teams are cutting through our midfield and what Peter said seems to make sense to me. Surely we would pick up more second balls as well and have more of an attacking threat moving forward (overload) and a tighter defensive unit defending the counter. We just seem to be so exposed and vulnerable to the counter attack at the moment.
