Five games into the 2024/2025 EFL Championship season and Luton Town finally grabbed their first win of the League season.
After the first four games of the season, the Hatters support had endured three defeats and a solitary draw but yesterday, courtesy of a smashing goal from Teden Mengi, that first win came our way.
Perhaps the biggest surprise in was that the gaffer, Rob Edwards, had decided to change his formation, playing just the single out-and-out striker preferring to utilise Elijah Adebayor, meaning that the club captain, Carlton Morris, had to be content with a place on the substitutes bench.
In a recent poll, where we asked if Edwards were to shake-up his strikers, we can reveal that the result was close, with 54% preferring to start with Adebayo as opposed to the 46% who opted for Morris.
Cheered on by a decent sized away support, the Hatters were to take the lead after just 10 minutes when a deft pass from Liam Walsh, after a move appeared to have broken down, saw Teden Mengi power home, with a side-footed shot, a wonderful goal.
The Hatters were the better side in the first half but couldn’t find that second goal to wrap the game up.
Instead, we had to face something of a Millwall barrage in the second half with Thomas Kaminski coming to the fore, producing two excellent saves, the first being a one-on-one with Macaulay Langstaff with our Belgian keeper getting an outstretched boot to deflect the strikers shot wide.
Deep into stoppage time, Kaminski was also called upon to make a great save when from a corner, and in a packed six-yard box, he clawed away, to safety, a header from Shaun Hutchinson to ensure the Hatters left the New Den with their first win of the season.
That first win lifts the Hatters to a lofty 19th place in the EFL Championship table with our next fixture being against the club immediately below us, Sheffield Wednesday, at Kenilworth Road, next weekend.

Luton Town Make Surprise Signing
Morning MH, yes a cracking result but let’s not yet get to full of ourselves.there are still major problems within the team. How many suicidal balls did players make I lost count of how many balls were played to the opposition or telegraphed and intercepted!!! Our crossing was diabolical yet again.that said we did show courage and determination. For me Edwards crucial mistake was when he took nakamba off that was the right thing to do.But moving our most technical gifted player from what I’ve seen of him so far from his best position and putting him in nakamba position from that moment we fell apart and were under constant pressure. Given Walsh is not Barkley but his position is receiving the ball from nakamba and playing in the middle of the park and pushing forward linking the forwards. Technically Walsh looks our best player let’s hope Alan can keep him fit( just a joke mate) for me there is an awful lot of work to be done still . We will pick up points against Millwall sheff weds an the like but currently I fear more results against the big boys like we got from Burnley.Sorry to be a miserable sod but I face facts.
I think if Baptiste had been on the bench he would have come on for Nakamba. Pelly can’t be trusted to play in that position. Walsh does look a very accomplished player but needs to be further forward. The German guy will hopefully be available soon as a defensive midfielder and Nakamba should be able to play more minutes next time. If those two can stay fit we will be in better shape but need the strikers to get up and running.
Does anyone know why Baptiste wasn’t in the squad yesterday?
Alan may be able to confirm this but I heard he picked up an injury in training last week.could not agree more about where Walsh must play.
