Courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic restricting what we can report on, here at Vital Luton, we’re running a new series highlighting the plethora of home-grown talent that has served the club well over the years.

Our series was prompted by a suggestion from a valued member of Vital Luton Town and we hope you enjoy it.

The first player selected for the series is as home-grown as they come Mitchell Anthony Thomas.

Born on 02-October-1964, Thomas was a defender who first arrived at Kenilworth Road when the Hatters scouts had noticed him playing for Limbury Boys Club.

Thomas, after making his debut for the club went on to make over a hundred league appearances for the club.

His defensive skills soon made him a favourite of the Kenilworth Road support, skilful, pacey and able to carry the ball with ease, it soon became obvious that Thomas would become the centre of attention for the big clubs in the English League.

In July 1986, Luton received a bid of £275,000 from Tottenham Hotspur for his services and Thomas was reunited with David Pleat, who was instrumental in bringing Thomas to Luton back in 1982.

Thomas went on to play for the North London club until August 1991 when he moved across London, to West Ham United, for a fee of £500,000.

In March 1994, on transfer deadline day, Thomas made an emotional return to Kenilworth Road and was to stay at the club until the summer of 1999, adding in excess of another 180 league appearances to his Luton total.

Unfortunately, the Hatters were in a mess in the summer of 1999 and had gone into receivership, as a result, several players were off-loaded, and Thomas was sold to Burnley where he remained until retiring from the game in 2002.

As far as video footage of the player is concerned, there is very little out there, however, we did find the following clip of Thomas netting a rare goal for the Hatters:

Mitchell Thomas, a fine player, discovered by Luton and a player who had a pretty decent career I’ll think you’ll agree.
