Luton Town 1 Sunderland 1 – Hatters Still Looking For First League One Win

The spoils were shared, at Kenilworth Road, in an entertaining clash between Luton Town and Sunderland.

In front of a capacity crowd of over 10,000, the first half was competitive although, it’s fair to say, there were very few clear-cut chances engineered.

However, the Hatters did have the majority of the possession which made it even more disappointing that they were to go into the break a goal down.

The goal came in the 45th minute when Lynden Gooch threaded the ball through for Josh Maja to score with a crisp shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Sunderland, inspired by the goal, opened the second half as the better team and Gooch almost doubled their lead when Marek Stech let a shot slip through his hands but thankfully it went over the bar.

Midway through the half, and probably against the run of play, the Hatters equalised.

The goal came from a corner taken short and when Alan Sheehan’s pass found Matty Pearson, in the box, the summer signing made no mistake with his shot, resulting in Kenilworth Road erupting.

Both sides went looking for the winner, Sunderland came close when an effort from Chris Maguire slammed against the crossbar and late on the Hatters missed two good chances to snatch victory when Danny Hylton headed wide from a good position and Dan Potts headed over in stoppage time.

One point out of the six available is the Hatters return so far, things can only get better.
