Luton – The Worst Easter I Can Recall

Image for Luton – The Worst Easter I Can Recall

As we eagerly await the return of Championship action, with two fixtures over a buy Easter period, I would like to recall an Easter period that was, in my opinion, one of the worst I have witnessed.

In fact, the only good thing from the Easter period I am going to recount is the plethora of chocolate eggs I received.

Back in the 1974 / 1975 season, the Hatters were back in the top-flight of English football for the first time in ages, but as we entered the holiday period, it was essential the Hatters got a couple of results to ease their relegation fears.

Like this year, the first Easter game was a trip to the Baseball Ground to take on a decent Derby County side.

In front of 24,619 spectators, on Easter Saturday, the Hatters were on the end of a 5-0 drubbing.

But it was no ordinary drubbing with the headlines concentrating on the achievements of one man, a certain Roger Davies.

The gangly centre-forward terrorised the Hatters defence and score all FIVE goals, as the Hatters travelled home with their tails between their legs.

Matters did not get any better on Easter Monday when Luton Town faced Wolverhampton Wanderers, at Molineux.

But, in another one-sided game, the Hatters were to lose 5-2 and relegation became more than just a possibility.

Sadly, our fate was concealed when Leeds United were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur, ensuring the North London side retained their status and a one-season stay in the top-flight had come to an end for Luton Town.

But can anyone remember a worse Easter holiday period?

If so, please feel free to enlighten me.

Hi MH ,I certainly remember those Easter games in 75 as I was at both of them.Roger Davies could have had even more goals as I recall he struck the woodwork twice. I was also at Spurs the following sat when we lost a vital relegation battle 2-1, the winner being blatantly off-side.I think one of the Futcher twins got sent off for protesting.
The first season I properly followed the Town was 1966-7- not one of our best as we struggled in the lower reaches of Div 4. In those days it was usual to have 3 matches over Easter, usually Good Friday,Saturday and Easter Monday. Easter was quite early that year and I remember it was cold ( some things never change) We lost 2-1 on Friday at Hartlepools ,but worse was to follow the following day at struggling York City as Town were thumped 5-1. In the return match against Hartlepool at Kenilworth Road on Easter Monday, Pools went home 2-0 winners. Both our goals over Easter were scored by Graham French. We did gain revenge over York on the final day of the season with a 5-1 win, our best of the season, which meant we finished 17th. But it was a very different story the following season !

Indeed it was, my first season as a visitor to Kenilworth Road, courtesy of my late father. No better way to start than with a promotion campaign.

1967-8 was a wonderful season coming after that poor effort the campaign before. The 4 -0 win at home to Crewe is one of my favourite memories of being a Hatters fan. Probably only just surpassed by the night we officialy got back into the Football League under Sir John in 2014. These two promotions meant all the more to me than the others I have also enjoyed as they both ended periods in the doldrums and stated that we were on the way back up. I wonder what other fans consider their Best Season ?

Now that could lead into a great article, I’ll compile something this Easter weekend. Thanks for the idea AlanR.
