Luton – The Carlos Mendes Gomes Mystery

When it came to our summer transfer splurge, by my reckoning, the signing of Carlos Mendes Gomes, could have been our most expensive acquisition.

Mendes, our seventh signing of the summer, came from Morecambe, a club who had just gotten promotion to League One for the first time in their history.

Now we are never privy to how much players usually cost with the term ‘undisclosed fee’ featuring prominently in press releases.

But, ahead of the deal being completed, a fee close to £500,000 was mentioned in the press, although I do not think that was the actual fee Luton would have paid.

When the signing was announced, here at Vital Luton Town, we published the following article – and-mendes-makes-it-seven-signings – we also published another – carlos-mendes-gomes-the-acid-test – which covered the reactions of the Morecambe fans who were gutted to see their prized asset leave.

It is fair to say that I was excited to see what Carlos Mendes Gomes could do in a Luton shirt, but like the social media poster below:

I am perplexed as to why he has not been, as of yet, given a chance to show what he can do.

Reviewing the season so far, you can see that when it comes to the Championship, he has barely featured:

• Peterborough (h) – 8 minutes as a substitute
• West Brom (a) – 0 minutes
• Barnsley (a) – 0 minutes
• Birmingham City (h) – 0 minutes
• Sheffield United (h) – 0 minutes

Aside from those eight minutes against Peterborough, Carlos Mendes Gomes has been warming the bench, obviously frustrated, like us, at his lack of action.

Indeed, the only time ha has started was against Stevenage in the Carabao Cup defeat where he played the full match and was one of the trio of Hatters who could not find the net from the twelve-yard mark in the penalty shoot-out.

The social media comment I posted earlier in this article, carries a reference to Joe Morrell, let’s hope that was made in jest and does not come to fruition.

But the big question remains – when will Carlos Mendes Gomes be given his chance to show what he can do?

Morning mh, if you read Alan’s reply to me on the bench. You will see that our injury list is worse than reported. Gomes, pelly, lansbury Jerome are all carrying injuries but have been playing with them. So all our moaning may be wrong with all these hidden injuries. So I will apologise.

No need to apologise chris, we all get info from different sources. You hear more about transfers. I hear more from the treatment side….
