Luton Support Divided On Striker Signing

It would appear that I was not the only Luton supporter taken by surprise this afternoon when the club announced they had signed Cameron Jerome.

The grapevine had been full of rumours that Luton were in the market for a striker, or possibly two, to support Elijah Adebayo, but Jerome was not somebody who had previously appeared in the transfer speculation relating to possible signings.

But, looking at the comments made on social media, it appears there are a right mixed bag.

Returning to my ‘surprised’ reaction, the comment below sums up my views perfectly:

But while the signings of Onyedinma, Burke and Campbell were welcomed with enthusiasm by the Hatters support, things, when it comes to social comments, are not quite so universally one sided when it comes to Jerome, as the following illustrate perfectly:

Indeed, it does not match the profile of our usual signings but, in these pandemic driven financially hard times, we must act accordingly.

But as I pointed out in another article – luton-sign-a-new-striker – Nathan Jones sees Jerome as competition / support for Adebayo, as this wise comment concludes:

Although Jerome found himself playing in Division One last season, with the MK Dons, there are posts out there offering an insight into what he can bring to Luton:

Clearly, open is divided on this signing but given our backing I am sure that Cameron will not let us down and could well play his part in our continued development as a Championship club building for the future.

As I an Alan said the new striker was not going to be someone that had been discussed on here. But people should remember he’s been playing in Turkey. That’s why no one except mk wanted to take a chance on him. Also many on here were in favour of an experienced striker was what’s wanted they’ve got that. Also as you know my reasoning was that he’s been bought in for a purpose. That may happen.

good to see 2 experienced players join the club.if luton had some spare cash you might have seen maybe better players. i am still convinced that our young players will come through, and training with experinced players can only be good. cant wait to see the first team sheet,so many options.COYH and ITALY.

Can’t believe some on social media are saying it’s one of the strangest signings ever to sign Cameron….. Browne and Galloway spring to mind …..

    • Jim says:

Sorry but they feel like Graeme Jones signings. Experienced bums on seats rather than improving the first team. Even the way they’ve been talked about (especially Jerome) is being there primarily to add experience – and in Lansbury’s case we’ve signed yet another midfielder mainly cos he’s a friend of Cohen. Butterfield, McManaman and several others bought that summer spring to mind. I hope I’m wrong but I’m in the disappointed crowd. After the first 3 signings, these 2 feel like steps back. Hopefully I have to apologise in a few months.

Hi Jim, while I understand your feelings about Jerome. Can I just say that if you had read some of the other posts. There may be a reason for that. Things could happening we don’t yet know about and that’s the reason why we have signed him. So be patient and wait an see what happens.

  • Alan says:

Well said Chris…..I personally feel it will all fall into place for a very profitable season.

  • Graham says:

NJ likes players with promotion experience. So, bring on Jerome, the boy loves getting promoted out of the Championship

  • Peter Scott says:

We have to give the guy a chance – cant be any worse than Danny Hylton – I think NJ wanted some cover before giving Hylts and Pelly their marching orders. The guy has played in the Premiershipship for 8 seasons and scored over 60 goals in the Championship as well. The ideal player to get us in the playoffs at least this coming season! Zlatan is 39 and still playing for Milan he scored 15 goals last season

  • jimbo says:

well said peter, new faces to replace the stale players. would be happy to consolidate position in championship, until some top players can be afforded. happy with all signings so far. had a look at ercan on youtube, can score but against crap defenders.COYH.

When did you last see a luton player score from 30 yrds in either corner jimbo twice he did it and great heading abilities something not seen since mick an can scramble a goal. He plays in a bundsligua not a championship. Has scored in europa league!!!. An anyway he doesn’t play for us. Its only a rumour. So if he does come here not!!! You can moan then.

  • jimbo says:

calm down chris, its only a comment. look at the defence? i say it as i see it.if he played against championship defenders, would be a different story. if you want open discussion why do you accuse people of moaning. we all have different opinions. would you like everyone to agree with you and have no say.chill out,we all support LUTON.
