Luton – Solving That Quality Dilemma

For the second consecutive Championship match, the travelling Hatters support has watched their side squander chances.

Last Friday night, 2,452 saw Luton fail to score at Loftus Road while last night 1,418 saw the Hatters create chances but fail to score at the City Ground.

But it is not as if we are failing to create chances, just failing to take them.

Against Forest, their keeper had an inspired game, saving a penalty, albeit with his trailing leg, and then producing a decent late save to deny Kal Naismith.

But, as we are finding out, when it comes to the Championship, lacking quality and composure in front of goal can prove to be costly.

It is something Nathan Jones has talked about in his post-match interview and last night was no exception with, as reported by The BBC, Nathan remarking:

“We are a good side and we’ve shown that here. Before the sending-off we were comfortable, our shape was good and we were good defensively.

“We just needed to show a bit of quality but, being realistic, we haven’t got the budget for a Mitrovic, Solanke or a Harry Wilson.

“The stats show that we’re creating enough chances and keeping the ball well enough, but I’m sick of looking at the numbers.

“The players are giving me everything, but certain moments are stopping us being a top-six team with a bottom-three budget.”

But what is the answer?

One poster on social media, makes a succinct point:

But that in itself is a challenge.

Whilst players are available, even bringing in an up-and-coming youngster, from a Premier League club, can be a costly business unless the parent club are wiling to subsidise their wages.

Perhaps the answer is to discover an uncut diamond but then again polishing such a player can be a time-consuming process.

Or is there, somewhere, a veteran striker who is yearning for regular game time?

It really is a catch-22 situation and one with no easy answer.

But what are your views on the above subject matter?

Everyone is bemoaning our strikers missing opportunities we’ll I said at the start of the season this team had goals all over the pitch written in it. Now it seems to me that players are all relying on strikers by trying to give them the ball. Just occasionally they should have a go from distance Berry Bell naismith Fred all have that ability an pelly as well as lansbury I said adebayo an cornick should get 10 to 15 each but others have to chip in an stop expecting ade an Harry to do it. We have the quality we are just not using it in the right way. Most of the team have now had 3yrs experience of this league and should be doing better.

Hi Chris, I was only reacting to some of the comments directed at my posts( which were not read properly by some) wasn’t meant to sound negative. Thought overall last nite was an improvement and we were unlucky not gain 3 points. I too think we will win on Saturday. Hope collo has a quiet game, noticed he scored last Saturday…

Hi Alan, it wasn’t aimed at you but all those who didn’t take note of my comments earlier you know what about. Wasting time an not putting ways we could improve like me

  • Colin Logan says:

The team has improved from last season itinerary NJ is going to have to spend money to bring in a player who can put the ball in bank of the net the problem is we don’t have millions of pounds to do that I do agree that other players need to step up with regards to getting goals

Chris winter always has a lot to say but seems to me he quite often latches on to comments and repeats what others have said previously. His interpretation of my comment regarding Stoke supporters and the subsequent demise of his role there did not infer Nathan’s job was at risk only that sometimes he should show he listens to supporters. Being stubborn and constantly seen biting his nails does not in my opinion give confidence to his players. By constantly picking favourites when their performance is poor shows loyalty is sometimes misplaced.

As previous comments made the midfield should and must shoot and score goals from outside the box. Suggest videos should be shown of our midfleld players of the past scoring some great goals .

Hi 75, OK maybe the way I interpreted your comment was wrong. It was just the way it was written that seemed to mean something it wasn’t. I did say I didn’t fully disagree with you

For a good many post match interviews lately Nathan Jones has bemoaned the quality in the team he has moulded and nurtured over several years barring a short time which is well documented. He continues to pick week in week out a player who has been villified on this forum by many fans for his very lack of quality. If Nathan Jones bothers to read this site I say to him square pegs and round holes. You need a change try a round peg

Hi Chris thanks for your new understanding. Really look forward to all your comments and yes you do always suggest positives and normally start a further trail of comments which I am sure MH appreciates.

We both agree more goals must come from the midfield, corners and defenders here’s hoping. Lets also hope Collins does not score on Saturday like so many ex players.

While we are on the subject of quality. Is there anyone else out there scratching their heads as to why we payed for us a lot of money for gomes OK it was said for the future. But who pre season showed promise. Seems to have been dropping further down the pecking order an is now becoming the forgotten man. Now while I an mh both on viewing him last season didn’t see a championship player we felt he deserved a chance. So just what is the clubs thinking on this lad I would love to know. If you’re good enough then your old enough.

put dion pereira in the squad and put him on for 20 minutes. give people a chance. we have great young players, use them before you lose them. COYH.

  • Baz says:

I for one do not believe we have a lack of quality on the squad, in any area of the pitch. I do believe we sometimes have a lack of quality in the starting eleven however, with NJ insisting on playing certain players even when they are blatantly out of form. I would question if it is even form and not class!
Does anyone know why the promising Gomes has hardly got a sniff?
