Luton Rue Moment Of Misfortune Away To Charlton

Hopes of the Hatters making it three consecutive Championship victories on the bounce, came to a cruel end away to Charlton Athletic.

Cheered on by almost 3,000 vociferous Hatters supporters, Luton Town crashed to a 3-1 defeat, a defeat that sees them return to the foot of the Championship table, six points from safety with twelve games left.

The Hatters were more than holding there own when, with the game finely balanced at 1-1, they were deprived of a goal that would have given them the lead when James Collins was adjudged to have been offside.

If ‘Lady Luck’ had conspired to look away at that precise moment in time then the devil must have come into play when Collins, inexplicably, raised his arm to concede a penalty.

Falling 2-1 behind, Luton had to chase the game, but Charlton were to wrap it up with a third goal leaving the Hatters to contemplate what might have been.

After the game, talking to the local radio station and as reported by The BBC, Graeme Jones had this to say:

“I’ve got no complaints with the lads. The big moment in the game was our offside goal, which we’ve looked at and it wasn’t. If there was ever a game that swung on a big decision, that was it.

“At 2-1 you’re in the ascendancy then Collins obviously gives a silly penalty away. We’re chasing the game, try and get an extra attacker on the pitch and we concede a third goal.

“I thought we were fantastic. We played some good stuff. I think we’re starting to get a consistent performance and look about us, which satisfies me.”

Things are certainly beginning to look better, but the Hatters have two crucial home fixtures coming up, against Brentford in midweek and Stoke City next weekend. You feel that if Luton are to retain their Championship status then they have to take at least 4 point from those two games.

Luton Town v Brentford?

What was the reason the winning team was changed for this match and why weren’t Cranie and Hilton used as substitutes when things got bad. How can a team gel together when there are constant changes I realise they are unavoidable when injury is involved. Is it time for someone higher up to intervene

Hi mh, well a disappointing result. From where I was sitting it looked like collo had three fingernails an two toenails offside but marriner must have var vision. Its no good Jones whinging again. That’s the game. No lack of effort from the team. But the squad baffled me again.

Hi all, yes strange choices again made by GJ. I too for the life of me can’t understand why Hylton hasn’t played at all & others too, in the last two games. Yet again not enough use of the squad. Yes we had some bad luck but when we beat Charlton at home we won with an offside goal too. Also too many mistakes & inconsistencies again rearing their head. And losing to a team of fellow strugglers makes it worse as the gap between them & us is now huge. I think there is still hope as we have several winnable home games to come but we need Jones to rotate the squad more in key areas & hope Brown & Co aren’t out for too long. The other point I’d like to make is we have more chance of keeping players fit & not burning out if workload is shared. Think if we can win 5 & draw 1 or 2 we might survive but as usual not much faith IN GJ & GB.

  • Alan says:

Hi all, some strange comments…i am, as many on here know, one of gj & gb worse critics, but he had to make changes due to injuries. Although on friday gb said we a had fully fit squad to choose from….but at the end of the day he can only play 11….think hylts with feature heavily this week….be interested to hear everyone here their starting 11s…

  • Chris winter says:

Hi mh, so gj thinks that var should be used in the championship. Well personally after all the decisions made by var I’ve seen so far I don’t. The decision in the Burnley game after 16 seconds to rule out a goal an give a penalty at the other end was farcical add on the offsides for fingernails an toe nails. And some of the so called handball make it a joke. I can handle a ref missing something that’s that’s the game as was. An the fun of giving him abuse was part of the game. Now games are slowed down to boring levels while we wait. What do you think an the readers of this think.

  • Al says:

Hi Chris, on your point about VAR, I agree with you entirely that it slows the game right down & now fans hesitate to celebrate a’ goal’they think their team has scored, therefore also deminishing the enjoyment factor & also as you also mentioned, the people making these decisions are still cocking it up with the benefit of watching the incidents again aren’t they?

    • Chris winter says:

Hi Al, yes they are no better than just having a ref so why bother with it. And you’re point about gj all he talks about is bs. So how can the players understand him cos no one else does.

  • Al says:

Hi all again, just like to add I really hope Hylton at least plays a part tonight. The man has been fit for over 2 months now & he’s had 1 bit part outing so far,it’s going to take time for him to get up to speed to get him back to his ‘super Danny’ status, but as usual GJ resembles a modern day Nero watching Rome burn. Don’t get me wrong when we won two in a row I was as I’m sure all you fellow hatters fans were too beginning to believe again but although as Alan rightly said there were injuries, Hylton wasn’t & if Hylton was getting game time I feel he would be helping Cornick & Collins immensely too by sharing the workload. Who knows that may be why JC handled at Charlton as perhaps he is getting worn out mentally with not enough support. Also GJ keeps changing what he says in his interviews so God knows what his team talks consist of. I reckon even a professor would struggle to understand his ‘logic’ never mind footballers.

  • Al says:

Hi Chris, thanks mate. Would like to ask you & the others a question back. Does anyone believe on here we have even a nats do dahs of staying up. Its just that as we have won 3 out of the last six, if we continued in that vein in our final twelve games, we would win 6 out of 12 which would obviously give us 48 points? We all know GJ is in our view creating a massive handicap in making this a possibility but I’m thinking to be honest the players are starting to show signs now of playing like championship players & are at least at the moment showing a bit more consistency & fight?

  • Chris winter says:

Hi Al, with regard to the question. I honestly don’t know what to think. We are just so hit an miss under him. Yes the players are looking at last championship performers. But for me what’s gone on before has done so much damage that probably its to late to save our season. Now watch the boys go out tonight an get a result. Just to confuse me even more lol

  • Al says:

Hi Chris, expertly summed up, couldn’t agree with you more. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get revenge tonight for the 7-0 drubbing inflicted a while back. Let’s hope GJ uses that as a way of geeing the lads up. If we could win tonight & Saturday then we are right back in GJ or no GJ I feel. Fingers crossed eh? COYH

  • Al says:

Brilliant, just what the doctor ordered. Finally we are seeing what we’ve been waiting for all season, the players stepping up to the plate. I am beginning to believe they are more than capable now of pulling off the great escape but still a lot to do. Some immense performances, I think Carter Vickers has brought much more calm to the defence, The Slug is starting to justify his transfer fee, Rea has been immense, Cornick is improving every game & everyone else played their part. Still wish he would give DH more game time but at least we won & now let’s hope we can beat Stoke because I think it’s crucial to try & at least avoid defeat with our relegation rivals as these 6 pointers are I think more important than losing to the top teams

  • Chris winter says:

Hi Al, yes a very good win and now the hard work begins. You are right now we must win our 6pointers.with regards the slug yes he’s starting to show what he can do. But as I’ve said previously what the f**k was Jones thinking at the start of the season when against all advice from experienced coaches was it takes 6 months for foreign players to settle down. Was it nievty or arrogance I know what I think. But make up your own mind about that. Just think where we could have been now with the 15 points it cost us in mistakes. Carter vickers is looking sound and as spurs don’t see him fitting I think we should be doing all we can to get him signed permernantly

  • Alan says:

Hi chris, totally agree m8. We should being planning to get ccv in now…slug was thrown in to quick by far…lets hope results go our way 2nite & we see off stoke on sat…..great escape ? Maybe, just, maybe….

  • Chris winter says:

Hi Alan, the slug is proving his worth now. Feel sorry now about him being in that situation at the start. I still can’t get excited yet about a great escape. I just don’t trust gj. I know I will yet again get abuse from certain people. But I said before the season started an I say it again gj is not the right man for ltfc. As you say I think it depends on what happens with other clubs form. Rather than our own results. That’s what I think

  • Alan says:

Hi chris , no abuse from me bud, totally agree with ya

  • Chris winter says:

Hi all, just seen an article on luton today. According to data anylists luton town will get 44 pts by the end of the season. This is gj’s target sadly this will put us bottom of the league. So realistically we need 54 pts to be safe. So gj you love statistics an according to you they don’t lie let’s see who’s right!!!
