Luton – Reflections On Moments Of Madness

The weekend is fast approaching but, as I’ve mentioned before, international football will be the centre of attention.

With no Hatters action, I thought I’d take the opportunity to take one last look at the FA Cup action from last weekend.

One incident continues to generate headlines, that of Aleksandar Mitrovic receiving a straight red card for pushing the referee, Chris Kavanagh, in the quarter-final tie between Manchester United and Fulham, at Old Trafford.

It was a moment of madness that, following the awarding of a penalty to Manchester United, saw three red cards waved.

But the one received by Mitrovic continues to be the main talking point.

A straight red card normally carries a three-game ban but there are calls for the striker to be given an extended ban.

Many are comparing the incident to when Paulo Di Canio pushed another referee Paul Alcock to the ground and, subsequently received an 11-game ban for his actions.

Now I’m not so sure that Mitrovic will receive such a severe punishment but his actions need to be made an example of although some pundits are way off the mark when they mention Mitrovic’s action in the same context as Eric Cantona’s kung-fu kick on the Crystal Palace supporter, Matthew Simmons, for which he received a 9-month ban.

But what are your views on the ongoing situation, what punishment would you like to see meted out to Mitrovic?

Also, can you recall any similar gross incidents involving Luton Town players in the distant past?

If so, please feel free to remind us in the comment facility beneath this article.

Think we should take him on loan, a good few of our refs might think twice before being so abhorrent in their decision making!
On a serious note, make an example out him. I have always been envious of how giants in the game of rugby are so respectful of officials and how embarrassing it is that these string beans of pumped up hot air in football are so disrespectful.
Would love to see the game evolve this way in the next decade and only action will instill change.

he should’nt have pushed him, should have picked him up and shook some sense into him. referees make too many wrong decisions, what punishment do they recieve. i often wonder how some players restrain themselves.something better change.COYH.

He cannot possibly get away with standard punishment. He committed several offences. Dissent using foul or abusive language at the referee 1 red card. Not given at the time. Backing up the referee pointing in his face yellow card. Pulled the referee who was trying to put distance between them second red card. (Red card shown) continued to pursue the referee saying god knows what. At this point he has failed to leave following a red card which is his third red card offence. Still shouting and abusing the referee potentially another one.
