It has emerged that Luton Town were in negotiations to buy Rotherham Central defender Lee Williamson through transfer deadline day.

Leeds United and Luton were both in the market for the league one star, but whereas Leeds interest dissipated during the day, Mike Newell strove to get his man.

An initial bid of £100K was turned down flat, then a second bid of £125K with a further £200K in add-ons was under discussion, but eventually, Rotherham manager Alan Knill, (pictured above) felt the player was worth more than that and the deal fell through late on.

Newell will now look to sign a central defender on loan during the two weeks such transfers are allowed after the transfer window closed last night.
