Luton – Not What The Doctor Ordered As Points Are Dropped Against Blackpool

Is disappointed the correct word to use or should I be delighted that, with two games to go, we are very much in the shake up for a Championship play-off place?

After a couple of hours thought, I’ve edged towards disappointed.

Three points today would have almost sealed that play-off place, instead, although I will accept, we were scuppered by a raft of injuries, we just didn’t rise to the occasion.

Too many of those chosen just didn’t do themselves justice.

After scoring so early, Blackpool were there for the taking, but our game just disintegrated and, for some strange reason, we just couldn’t string more than two passes together.

Okay, I’ll accept the officials were not from the top drawer and I agree with the suggestions that we should have had a penalty when Snodgrass was clearly fouled, but, then again, I though we were lucky to escape conceding a second penalty when Naismith clearly caught a Blackpool player in the box.

But then we could contest we were deprived of a late winner when the assistant referee reckoned Adebayor had committed a foul in the build-up, a tough decision, but then life is tough.

Naturally, social media is awash with views on the game, with some harking on and on about the officials robbing us of a win:

Like I said earlier, Blackpool should also have had a second penalty, swings, and roundabouts and all that malarky!

Others, posting on social media, were honest enough to admit that the performance was not up to scratch:

It was, but with the amount of injures we’re having to cope with and the pressure on the team to get a result, it didn’t come as too much of a surprise, the one positive aspect being we didn’t lose.

But, one post I found did make me smile:

A decent side, or one that could play with freedom knowing their season is finished.

But, on a day of doom and gloom, I’ll finish with the social media posts by leaving you with this pleasant one:

Thanks, but if it is going to happen, we’ll have to do it the hard way and win either of our last two games, Fulham (a) and Reading (h).

It’s achievable but we need to improve dramatically on the fare served up against Blackpool.

Evening mh, as I said earlier post did we have 2 different refs!!! Also an repeating I think adebayo is struggling maybe with injury but his last 4 games his touch has gone. This is not knocking him just a fact. We have relied on him to much this season an not given him enough rest in my opinion. We either must recruit another proven goal scorer or rest him more. Leave him out at Fulham an back for reading an beyond if we qualify. Below par today little up front with a couple of exceptions when we didn’t go long.

ref was appalling, not the best we’ve had but not the worst, the Championship needs, as much as I dislike it, VAR to iron out these persistent errors. Elijah has hit that physical barrier where he’s so lethargic after running his backside off all season. I can’t see us getting anything at Fulham which makes reading a win or bust sceanrio.

I don’t think the Fulham game is as clear cut as you think. Now they are up an after today’s result. They could be a little complacent now is a great time to get them. Even with out adebayo. Who must be rested now.

as much as i like elijah, he is only one of eleven players. he runs his heart out, every time he plays. i agree he seems to be under par, but he still frightens the shit out of defences. n.j. must have aplan, but who else is injured. keep enjoying this fabulous run.stay positive.COYH.

Jimbo, I wasn’t critising him I said he has been overworked due to injuries an needs a rest yes he’s been outstanding all season but the toll is showing now an the need for another goal getter up front with him an cornick.

  • Andrew says:

I know we have Elijah and cornick up front and who are both quick so pump the ball up to them quickly but against Blackpool when we played the ball to feet we opened them up easily . I know we can’t do this against all who we play but surely we can do it more than we do Cardiff and Peterborough it just seemed hit and hope . I am not moaning for the sake of it but we do have good midfield players who can play . Coyh

Sad to read this morning that shea could be out for a year. This means that recruiting 2 keepers in preseason becomes a priority hope this does not impact on the nessessety to get another 15 to 20 goal getter in support of adebayo he cannot be expected to do again what he’s done this year. Let’s hope our finances stretch that far.

wonder if casey petitt will make the team. would love to see a young player show what he can do. alan did hint that young players might be needed, how right he was. chris i agree totally what you said about elijah, also other players understandably look fatigued. what a difference a fit squad makes. best of luck to james shea, good to see he is being looked after. One positive if boro don’t win on Wed its cut and dried unless there is a massive goal goal turn around with Millwall…..terrible news on shea. We should hear on bree and pelly this week too. Both could be long term. It’s a waiting game

Shockingly poor performance against Blackpool even after being gifted a goal in the second minute. We were only slightly better against Huddersfield and Forest. There’s still a reasonable chance of the Play 0ffs as our main rivals for 6th place will have to be nearly perfect to overtake us. Even a point may be enough.
But in the play offs, with the surprising exception of Forest, we will be up against clubs who have all beaten us comfortably in recent weeks. I don’t wish to be unduly pessimistic, and we do have injuries etc., but if we should get promoted we will get many awful beatings if we play as we have for the last few games. But the money will be welcome, I suppose. If only for one season ( plus parachute pay).

  • Alan says:

I wouldn’t say it was that shocking. The officials made it shocking again and for both sides. The ref can’t or didn’t give them a 2nd pen as he didn’t give ours up the The other end. As for the disallowed goal that was a joke. Keogh is a experienced defender and he knew he was beaten and if he thought There was a chance of a foul he would have thrown himself to the ground, but if you watch it back he tries, to his credit, to stay on his feet…then the lino apologises….woeful….
