Luton: not bright on day!

Luton’s away day problems continued on Saturday at Brighton’s Sunday League ground.

Luton played some attractive football at times but lacked any penetration at the sharp end, and surely cannot continue much longer without a recognisable strikeforce.

They had their chances in a period of domination in the first half but, once again, Luton conceded the inevitable first goal, when Savage was given the freedom of the Luton penalty area in the 40th minute, to head home Fraser’s free kick.

Spring missed a golden opportunity to equalise two minutes later side-footing wide after good work by Currie, but Luton battled a little better in the second half and the next goal was always going to be crucial.

Bell’s shooting boots continued to misfire as they had against Everton when he fired over when well placed, but at least he is getting into the positions and he’ll start finding the net soon. Perhaps he should have been used as an out and out striker in the circumstances prevailing?

Brill kept Luton in it with a great save shortly afterwards and then McVeigh was brought on for Bell. This did nothing to improve Luton’s likelihood of scoring, however, Brighton brought on Forster at the same time for Cox and this proved to be the decision of the match.

Two minutes later Forster had the ball in the net with what may even have been his first touch. Now it was unlikely Luton would get anything from this fixture.

Nonetheless they battled on and started to build some good moves again. Goodall took exception to a refereeing decision and earned an unnecessary yellow card which was to be important in the overall scheme of things.

Next Currie headed a cross down in the box to Andrew, he passed to Edwards and Edwards scored to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Luton were back in it until five minutes later a rash challenge by Goodall saw him receive a second yellow card and then the red and Luton’s chances evaporated with his departure. Not only were Luton a man down, but from the resulting free kick Jake Robinson put the ball on the head of Forster to put the game out of reach.
