As we sit poised ready for the action to commence, at Kenilworth Road, as Luton prepare to take on Bristol City, interesting news has emerged from just down the M1.

Earlier today, I commented on how the sacking, by Watford, of Claudio Ranieri, had brought a smile to my face – you-just-have-to-laugh-at-watford – well, it seems as if our local rivals have wasted no time in naming the likeable Italian’s successor.

It seems that Roy Hodgson, who retired from the game at the end of last season, after leaving Crystal Palace, has been tempted back for one last sojourn, taking over at Vicarage Road until the end of the season.

Hodgson, now 74, might be given time to keep Watford in the Premier League or, like so many others who have managed Watford, he may be clearing his desk in a few months.

Sat here in the editorial chair, I can’t comprehend why Hodgson has come out of his cosy environment to grasp the poisoned chalice, but I must congratulate Watford in having faith (not) in a young emerging boss.

Ranieri, aged 70, Roy Hodgson aged 74, who is next?
