Luton – It Is A Funny Old Game

For football, as a whole, it has certainly been a strange week, perhaps the strangest of the season.

Who would have though that, this time last week, we would have witnessed the formation and collapse of a European Super League, and all in the space of 48 hours!

As an EFL club we can only speculate what it would have meant for us, but you can bet it would not have been anything positive.

When the formation of the European Super League was announced, it only seemed right to gauge your opinion and, thankfully, it turned out 92% of you were not in favour.

But, if pushed for one abiding memory of the failure of the adventure, it would have to be the reaction of the Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez.

When pushed on why he thought it would be good for the game, Perez promptly came up with the theory that not enough of the younger generation were addicted to the game and that it was because it was too long.

Clearly, with the formation of the ESL based around the American franchise system, Perez was looking at changing the game from two 45-minute halves to something else, possibly a game of four quarters to maximise TV advertising income.

An absolute mad idea I would say.

But I was reminded by the Vital Luton Town reader, Alan, that we have had our own madcap ideas, most notably Gurney and his Formula 1 track at Junction 10 of the M1, a tale revisited by a former editor of this site – Gurney Bankrupt – and the much-vaunted Kholer-Dome back in 1994

It is a funny old game is it not?
