Luton – Clamour To Sign Veteran Striker Grows

Common sense suggests Luton Town do not have the financial prowess to go out and spend big this transfer window.

Indeed, if Nathan Jones is to add to the squad it will, I believe, be with guile and very little expenditure.

Last week, watching Sky Sports, the former Premier League striker, Jermain Defoe, revealed he’d been released by Glasgow Rangers and was looking for a new club.

At the time, a couple of posts in our comment facility inferred that the Hatters could do worse than try to tempt Defoe to Kenilworth Road, on a temporary deal.

I did contemplate covering it in an article but decided to place it on the back burner, that was until today when, yet another post appeared, this time from Gary Floyd, proposing the same thing with Gary remarking:

“We need a forward go and get Jermain Defoe until end of season he’s free agent, 12 goals might get us to play offs let’s give it a go.”

So, is it something Luton should seriously consider?

Could a 39-year-old Defoe be the difference between a mid-table finish or clinching a play-off place?

Please feel free to have your say in the comment facility beneath this article.

Whilst I understand the popularity of signing defoe an being in the championship may appeal to him. I feel the financial situation of other clubs may be bigger than we can afford even if we offload 2 or 3 players. So. I would be very supprised if he came.

To be honest he would command a big salary as he has been at some big clubs so i think thats a big fat no due to are financing

Look, we need to stop talking about prem football, the board don’t have the money or inclination at the moment, we don’t have the stadium to support prem footy unless the plan is to do a yo yo for a few seasons till stadium is built, playoff’s are a possibility but no further for time being

    Not for me

Apparently Defoe took a 65% pay cut on his last £3m a year deal to stay at Rangers before Gerrard left. That’s still over £20k a week. So no thanks. Even a further 75% pay cut would be over the top.

We’ve already two older strikers. And much as Jerome hasn’t proved his value on the pitch yet, who knows whether his influence is behind how good Adebayo has been? And he had his best game for us on Saturday. So maybe he’s found his rhythm with us now.

it wouldn’t surprise me to see him end up at either Stoke or Blackburn
