Luton Boss Becomes Embroiled In VAR Conundrum

One comment I stumbled across in the media caught my eye and has the potential to open a right old can of worms.

Nestling in the pages of Luton Today, was the following comment from Nathan Jones, relating to VAR:

“It’s a difficult job, refereeing a football game, but there’s also four of them there that need a hand and sometimes I’m baffled.”

Now it has always been a bone of contention, for me, that we have a two-tier rule system when it comes to VAR, those that have it and those that do not!

I was always of the opinion that the game should be a level playing field and it appears I am not alone in that thought.

Discussing the subject and as reported by our aforementioned source, the gaffer had this to say:

“I think the Chelsea manager Emma Hayes was calling for VAR in the women’s game, well, without being disrespectful, I think we need it in the Championship if the women’s game is going to have it.

“It’s a lot quicker in the Championship than the women’s game and decisions need to be made.

“There’s big crowds and big things at stake in the Championship.”

Now Nathan has a point, although I have nothing against women’s football, surely if that is the case then VAR should be introduced across the whole football spectrum.

Continuing, Nathan further added:

“I’m convinced we’d be a minimum four, six, seven points better off if we’d had VAR.

“We never knew what was going to happen in Saturday’s game, but if we’d got decisions right in others, we’d be in a far better position.”

If that were the case, those additional points would see the Hatters climb from 13th in the table to somewhere around the play-off positions.

Or is it a case of these things evening themselves out over the course of a season?

But perhaps the biggest problem in introducing VAR across the board would be logistical.

I am not sure there are enough decent officials to referee the quantity of fixtures we already have, let alone having enough to man all the VAR stations required!

But what are your views on the subject?

Please feel free to have your say in the comment facility beneath this article.
