I guess the realisation of just how time flies can be summed up when another figure from your youth passes away.
Yesterday, news broke that the former football commentator, Gerald Sinstadt, has passed away aged 91.
As a youngster, in days when live football was limited and everybody watched either Match of the Day or The Big Match, Gerald was one of those, who in his own calm way, delivered the commentary on many a match.
Back in those days, The Big Match was my preference, purely because as an energetic child, I could never keep my eyes open long enough to stay awake for Match of the Day.
I used to sit right in front of the television, much to my mum’s angst and hang on to every word uttered by the likes of Brian Moore, Hugh Johns, Gerry Harrison and Gerald Sinstadt.
Now it would appear that only Gerry Harrison is left, with the others having all passed away.
Sometimes, or perhaps that should be often, I wonder how the game today would be covered by such commentary giants, I’m sure they would do a better job than some of the clowns who commentate these days!
RIP – Gerald Sinstadt.
