Luton – A Blast From The Past

I’ve been away for the weekend, spending some time in the lovely city of Nottingham.

I’ve been before, to watch the Hatters and also with some Chelsea supporting mates, but I’d never ventured further than Meadow Lane or the City Ground.

Wandering around it fair to say that me and the wife got lost, indeed, come the time to return to the hotel, we opted for the services of a taxi rather than wander aimlessly around the streets.

But, leaving for home, Sunday morning, with the wife navigating, my memories of Nottingham were stirred when her skills took us past Meadow Lane.

Going past the ground, I couldn’t help but recall a day long gone by when Luton were visiting Notts County, for an early kick-off because on the same day, Nottingham Forest were hosting Ipswich Town in an FA Cup tie.

I remember the Hatters support being camped on the open terrace and midway through the game we heard a noise from over the back of the stand. The commotion got louder and louder and several hundred Luton fans moved to the back of the terrace to take a look.

The commotion was coming from the Ipswich Town fans who were being lead, from the station, past Meadow Lane and onward towards the City Ground.

Naturally, verbal insults were exchanged, and I recall the words tractors and fertilisers being bandied about, all of which was taken in good faith by the boys from Suffolk.

But soon they’d gone, and everyone returned to watching the game.

With the final whistle sounded, we were soon heading for the car park and it wasn’t long before we were heading for home. But before we started to focus on getting back to a certain pub, in Luton, we crossed the River Trent, only to see some regulars from our pub brawling with some Nottingham Forest fans, something we were to joke about when our return to The Heron was sealed.

Great memories but I can’t for the life of me remember what year it was, can anyone help?
