The relatively short journey back from Southend, on Saturday evening, was a pleasant one.

After all, what’s not pleasant about such a drive when you’ve just witnessed the Hatters extend their unbeaten run in the league to sixteen games and also hit the top of the League One table.

This Tuesday, Luton Town welcome Portsmouth to Kenilworth Road in a fixture that pits top against second and it is expected that our quaint little ground will be full to capacity, with Portsmouth bringing enough supporters to fill the away end.

Mick Harford, still in his caretaker role as the board look to appoint somebody on a permanent basis, will be looking for his side to make it 17 games unbeaten, a remarkable feat and one the Hatters have not managed since 1969.

However, although the Hatters are top of the table, we’re realistic enough to accept that if the two teams immediately below us win their games in hand, Luton will be back in the play-off zone.

Therefore, it is imperative that the Hatters pick up maximum points against Portsmouth thereby issuing a real statement of intent, even more so with the games coming thick and fast over the coming weeks.

With the games coming thick and fast it’ll be interesting to see whether Harford will make changes to the starting eleven that served him so well at Roots Hall, but if he does, we’re sure those who come in will be up to the task.

In what we, here at Vital Luton Town, perceive will be a tight game, we reckon the Hatters will edge this 2-1 and maintain their place at the top of the table.
