Is The Answer To Luton’s Woe Staring Us In The Face?

|

Or perhaps it is not as simple as that!

Inspiration for an article, to keep the front page of Vital Luton Town rolling, comes from the responses to the articles posted.

Last night, as I was looking through the comments left, one from Chris caught my eye.

It related to the much-discussed / debated tenure of Graeme Jones as the Hatters manager.

The gist of the article is that the author of the comment, would support the immediate sacking of Graeme Jones and install Mick Harford for the remaining games of the season, basically suggesting we’ve nothing to lose (see below)

“My solution – Sack Jones now pay him off, get big Mick in for the remaining games, if it pays off we’ll get a pay-out for staying in the championship, that’ll help with paying off Jones, then next season we can rebuild.”

It’s a solution that I’m sure many would support, but it does have one complication.

Last season, when Mick Harford picked up the pieces after Nathan Jones had left for Stoke City, the former striker exorcised a demon when he led the club to promotion.

Harford, in his previous spell as manager, had the misfortune to be in charge when the Hatters lost their League status and slipped into non-league football.

Naturally, nobody blamed Mick, relegation was inevitable after the club were hit with a 30-point deduction for misdemeanours committed by a previous regime.

But, with his feelings for the club, Mick felt the pain of relegation more than the rest of us.

Therefore, although the idea gets my support, would Mick be prepared to take over, in such difficult circumstances, knowing relegation is, most probably, the only conclusion to our miserable season?

Unless, of course, he can instigate a miracle and deny, what the majority believe is the inevitable come May!

Hi mh, you already know my views on this question. So I won’t go over old ground. What I will say is continuity is needed. But as I put forward a couple of times why not give our coach a go he did all right last season. He got us promoted. I would not bring in a new manager but give him a mentor like I said yesterday. I think Neil warnock could have worked with him. But not gj or even John Moore

Sack Graeme Jones, yes, appoint Mick Hartford, no, as Mick must retain his love for Luton and status of cult hero.
I would appoint Neil Warnock on short term contract to gain time to access the way forward. If Neil is successful in keeping Luton up, he then becomes a leading candidate for manager.

Hi all, I have just reread Gary sweets comments about updating the scouting system to entice youngsters to join the club. Excuse me but does anyone on here remember the days when we produced many first team players ourselves. When we had a first class system in place. How many Welsh Scottish Irish players did our scouts discover. That have graced our team. Why then did the club dismantle it!!! Now it seems we only take local boys an beds is a small pond. So does this mean a return to the past cos it was better than today I say yes.

    • Mad Hatter says:

It’s a good plan but these days the Premier League clubs have a nasty habit of snatching any decent youngsters the ‘smaller’ clubs unearth. But, yes, it does seem to have been a mistake to dismantle the system that unearthed some unique talent.

Hi mh, yes the premier league clubs did hold sway. But you may have noticed that many of these don’t keep them long if they are not quick developers also they just loan many out to get a better price for them.. So people tell me that now agents are looking at clubs to develop youngsters for first team game time and then gain back their investment quicker. So this could be a route for their clients. Obviously the very best go prem way. But how many have been missed because of the system

      Something is obvious wrong!
Give Mick Hartford last fithteen games
      Nothing to lose??? 🙈

  • Chris winter says:

An worst of all kids of 8 or 9 now have agents!! When we were young we was honing our skills with a tennis ball against a wall or 20 a side in the playground or park!!!

    • Mad Hatter says:

you don’t see the kids now with jumpers for goalposts etc, too busy with PS or XBox games. As for agents, unbelievable, what has it come to?

  • Pip Birt says:

Hi for me the sacking of Jones and replacing him with big Mick is a no brainer get rid of Jones ASAP yes mick has said many times in the past that he doesn’t want to be a manager and even he would admit that that is not his fortae and the last thing he would like on his CV is another relegation while at the helm of Luton Town fc but surely even GJs staunchest supporters have to admit he has been given ample time and has come up short this season has been a disaster on the pitch we need a complete clear out of GJ and his whole support team and start afresh use the rest of the season to set things in place to be able to go again next season

    • Chris winter says:

I say it again mick will not do it again. So keep our current coach inhalgo an bring back continuity by giving him a mentor to steady the ship. But its not going to happen gj is here for now
