Stunned!

One word that sums up the result yesterday.

It was supposed to be like that, was it?

After a 6-game unbeaten run hopes were high, especially following the hard-fought for draw away to Leeds United, that Reading would be brushed aside and the Hatters would claim three more points in their quest to avoid a quick return to League One.

But those plans were brushed aside by a Reading team that came to Kenilworth Road and dismantled a defence that we thought, had eradicated those defensive woes that had cost us dearly earlier in the season.

After the game, Nathan Jones struggled, in his post-match interview, as reported by The BBC to explain what had happened, remarking:

“That performance was totally out of character and some of the worst defending I have ever seen in my time in management, certainly in my two spells here.

“It’s very difficult for me to have a go at my players today, because these are unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in, but these home games were opportunities we needed to take.

“The intensity around our press and around the ball were nowhere near what they needed to be.”

It wasn’t, now whether it was a one-off or our recent form was a false dawn remains to be seen, but, following that defeat, I’d suggest that confidence that we could retain our Championship status has just suffered a dip.

But we live in hope do we not?
