It`s not often that I take my advice but that is exactly what I did towards the back-end of last week.

Having extolled the virtues of Matlock, in Derbyshire, I decided to book into a local hotel and take the opportunity, with the wife in tow, to enjoy the FA Trophy 2nd round tie and also get away from Bedfordshire for the weekend.

But, as is often the case with such plans, it was in the lap of the gods when it came to the weather. Thankfully, a mid-morning pitch inspection saw the Causeway Lane ground deemed fit for a game of football, meaning Saturday afternoon was going to be spent watching the Hatters rather than being dragged around the shops.

Now I could ramble on about the game for ages but I guess that every man and his dog knows the ins-and-outs with Ainge putting us into an early lead before Matlock equalized and on a pitch that was a great leveler and just as we were contemplating an unwanted replay, to add to our fixture congestion, Jon Shaw became the hero of the hour and scored the winner in stoppage time.

Suffice to say, the two of us had a few drinks on Saturday night, sampling the local ales and the superb food on offer at the hotel we stayed in. All that is left to do is to tell her the trip was part of her Christmas present!
