The Hatters eased into the potentially lucrative FA cup 3rd round with a comfortable victory away to Gateshead.

However, the Hatters were pushed all the way by their non-league opponents until the Hatters superior fitness and skill levels took effect in the second-half.

Luton had to wait until the 41st minute before taking the lead, the goal coming when a mix-up in the Gateshead defence allowed Olly lee to score. Unfortunately, the goal was over-shadowed by an incident whereby the Gateshead defender Scott Barrow and the Gateshead goalkeeper Dan Hanford collided.

Barrow came off worse in the collision and play was held up for 17 minutes until the stricken Barrow was taken away on a stretcher and to a waiting ambulance.

The second half saw Luton take control of the tie, just past the hour mark, Dan Potts doubled Luton`s lead with a smart header across the goal from a decent cross by Andrew Shinnie.

The tie was, effectively, put out of Gateshead`s reach in the sixty-seventh minute when Elliot Lee collected a cross from his brother to finish with ease.

The score-line was made more comprehensive in stoppage time when strikers from Danny Hylton and Luke Berry, in the 91st and 94th minutes respectively, put the icing on the cake for the Hatters.

It remains to be seen who Luton draw in the 3rd round of the competition when the clubs from the Premier League and the Championship join in.
