After the nightmare of 1985, there were fears that this lunchtime it might just all kick-off again.

Thankfully, due to a huge Police presence that was not the case.

Officers from several Police forces did a wonderful job to keep any warring factions apart and the latest information we have is that 7 people were arrested throughout the course of the day for various public order offences.

Our sources tell us that 3 men were arrested before the game whilst the others were made after the game after an incident where a small group of fans engaged in a stand-off with Police in the Dudley Street / George Street area of the town.

Talking about the combined efforts of the various forces, the tactical commander of the day,

Superintendent Linda Kelly remarked,

“I have been pleased with the way today`s policing operation has gone,”

“It was an excellent partnership between ourselves, the clubs, the other forces and agencies. It is a shame that a small minority behaved badly after the game but the vast majority of fans enjoyed the occasion despite the result on the field and went away without causing any problems.”

“There will be a debrief and any people we identify who did cause problems we will look to arrest at a later time.”

I do, however, wonder exactly how much the Police operation cost!
