Decent Performance

Luton Manager Mike Newell was impressed with what he called a ‘decent performance’ by Luton Town against QPR on Saturday.

Could have been more

Mike was less impressed by the officials ruling out two further goals, which could have added to Markus Heikkinen’s 13th minute header and Steve Howard’s 85th minute strike.

Former striker Newell told the official Luton Town Website, ‘It might have been more. It’s gone out of the game now where you can’t compete for the ball in the air,’ referring to Steve Howard’s header, which beat the QPR keeper, Simon Royce, only for the referee to rule that Howard had fouled the Rangers’ custodian.

He also felt, at the time, that Warren Feeney’s tap in, after Steve Howard’s shot was parried by Royce, looked ‘a good goal’, but had to accept it after the assistant referee informed him that Howard was standing in an offside position when the ball came to him, prior to his shot.

Referring to the mini-break, in Portugal, planned for the Town players, due to their non qualification for the fourth round of the FA Cup next Saturday, he said that the lads have earned a break, due to their results in the first part of the season and that there would be no further opportunity between now and the end of the season.

He was adamant that no group bonding was required, but that they could ‘relax and recharge their batteries’ahead of their next scheduled match on Tuesday 31st January against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
