Whilst Andre Gray might have walked off with the tag of being our leading scorer last season, credit should also be given to Paul Benson for his contribution.

Benson, who spent the majority of the season on loan from Swindon Town but who is expected to sign for us on a permanent basis as soon as his contract with the Wiltshire side expires, netted 19 goals in all competitions.

At 34 years of age Benson is no spring chicken and if I were to be honest he does actually look older than 34, but he proved to be an astute acquisition by John Still and the ideal foil for the free-scoring Gray.

Reflecting on the season, a season that will live long in the memory of Hatters fans Benson had this to say about his contribution to the cause, remarking,

“I`m happy with my contribution, I think I`ve done what I expected to.”

“I would have liked to have got 20 goals, that`s my target if I`m honest, that`s what I set myself.”

“Had I not missed the last few games I think I might have made it, but I`m happy.”

“I don`t think I`ve over-achieved and don`t think I`ve under-achieved, I`ve hit the standards I thought I would.”

“I`m delighted, but it`s not about individuals, it`s about the team and the main aim when I come here was to get the club promoted and that was achieved.”

With Benson having experience of the Football League, his inclusion in the squad next season will be invaluable and perhaps, just perhaps, he will get to that 20 goal mark he references.
