I had hoped after having adequate referees in our last couple of games I’d not be writing about them for a while.

But after witnessing what happened yesterday I could just not ignore the flood of social media comments about the performance of the referee against Sunderland, Scott Oldham.

I might have been able to ignore his performance apart from the ineptitude he showed when, in the 86th minute, he awarded Sunderland a penalty, a spot-kick that was to, ultimately, cost the Hatters two points with it looking very likely another 1-0 win was on the cards.

Keeping the threat to a minimum, Amarii Bell Osho was surprised as many of us as Amad Diallo fell to the floor believing he’d been fouled by Osho.

Now I don’t know about a foul but I’m not even sure that Bell touched him, to me it looked as if a gust of wind had blown Diallo over!

To rub salt in our wounds, and as mentioned earlier Diallo seized the opportunity to grab a point for Sunderland and deprive the Hatters of all three points by beating Ethan Horvath with the spot kick.

Looking at the social media posts, there are, in my opinion, some scathing verbal attacks on the performance of the referee:

I have to agree so would I but it still hurts that we didn’t and I dread to think about any potential consequences down the line.

Continuing:

It’s a point we’ve mentioned before but in vain, I just think we’re lumbered, in the EFL, with a bunch of referees that are not up for the job.

Let’s just hope we get a decent one next time out for the derby game with that lot from down the M1.
