Now that was a real statement of intent!

It has to be said that Alfreton are no mugs at home. The Derbyshire side had, before today, lost only one in ten, but Luton showed that, given the chance, they can steamroller most teams in this division.

With John Still giving Alfie Mawson and Pelly Ruddck their first Conference starts for the Hatters, Luton all but wrapped this game up in the first 18 minutes by scoring not once, not twice, not thrice but four times – some might say the perfect start.

The early carnage begun as early as the tenth minute when Andre Gray started the rout, it continued three minutes later when Benson got on the score-sheet and then a minute later (keep up at this time we were only in the 14th minute, Gray got his second of the game.

With the home fans, the minority in the crowd I might say as the Hatters travelling army swamped the ground, were stunned and that disbelief turned to stunned when, with 18 minutes on the clock, Luke Guttridge made it four.

Stood on the terraces it really was party time and the talk was of Luton, perhaps making it double figures. But Alfreton regrouped and halted the rout.

But, with the weather taking a turn for the worse, Luton did make it five when ,midway through the half Alex Lawless scored.

Despite cries of ‘we want six` it was not to be but Luton`s unbeaten run in the Conference Premier extends and just perhaps, there is a sniff of promotion in the air!
