A Time For A Bit Of Hindsight From The Luton Town Faithful

With Luton’s Championship programme so rudely, but necessarily, interrupted by the advance, across Europe, of the COVID-19 virus, it remains to be seen when the Hatters will be in action again.

But while this necessary but frustrating interruption goes ahead, it has given us time to reflect on a few things.

Today, with the Hatters relegation fight temporarily put on hold, I’d like to focus on the bottom three.

With the Hatters support having experienced back-to-back promotion campaigns, thereby seeing the club climb out of non-league football and into the Championship, the Kenilworth Road faithful were, quite rightly, on a high.

There was nothing wrong with hoping or expecting, that glorious run to continue.

Now, it’s fair to say that we weren’t expecting the season to end in yet another promotion, but our expectation levels were that the side could consolidate their Championship status and finish mid-table.

Unfortunately, we’ve had a rude awakening!

Despite the club bringing in a plethora of signings, the majority of which had previous experience of playing in the Championship, the club are embroiled in a relegation battle which many pundits expect to end in the club making a swift return to League One.

But, if you take a look at the current bottom three, in the Championship, there is a common thread.

Sitting either side of the Hatters, in the bottom three, are Charlton Athletic and Barnsley, two sides that were promoted, along with Luton, last season.

That fact confirms that, as we’ve come to find out the hard way, an enormous gulf exists between achieving promotion from League One and then managing to consolidate in the Championship.

Quite whether there is a different blueprint clubs should follow in the future remains to be seen but, if the season should end in disappointment and relegation perhaps one positive to take forward (and I’ve not given up hope of staying up) is that when Luton Town do bounce back they’ll be better prepared for what lies ahead.

It’s small consolation but as Luton Town supporters we’re well accustomed, especially in the last decade, to experiencing the highs and lows of supporting the Hatters.

But, returning to the point relating to a blueprint to surviving the climb out of League One and into the Championship, is there anything you’d have done differently?

Hi mh, yes after being advised by wiser Council, never start a foreigner in goal days after signing him. Giving him time to adjust to the change. And possibly saving up to 15 points in the process. Meaning we would not be in this position!!!!! 🤔🤔🤔

A good point, perhaps after that poor start he should have been taken out of the firing line ………… but that’s hindsight. Although he’s been a lot better in recent weeks I’d suggest, but the damage has been done.

Hi mh, my point exactly if the slug had been given time to settle first an shea had started those games things would look different now I’m sure. The slug is now looking like what we expected from him. An if only at the start management had listened an not beenso pig headed an i know best. Who knows

I guess with him being our record buy there was some kind of pressure to play him from the off but then there was no one with any bollox to pull him out of the firing line sooner.

Should. At the start of the season given more of a chance to the players who earned us promotion .

    • Mad Hatter says:

That’s a fair point, although the club brought in numerous players with Championship experience most were nothing more than what could, at best, be termed journeymen.

Keep wondering why we sold our best two players & then bought a keeper for over a million in the first place & mediocre new faces? If the board needed the money to finance the new ventures that they have now got permission for, wouldn’t it have been better to sell them once the said permission was granted. At least we would probably have had a lot more points by now.

    • Mad Hatter says:

Did those two players want to leave? I don’t think so, but the cash offered was too much of a temptation I’d suggest.

  • Al says:

Also as I said previously would have utilised squad a lot more, instead of picking same players including ones out of form
